Word Equation

A written description of a chemical reaction using the full names of reactants and products. Word equations show what reacts and what is produced but give no information about quantities or ratios.

Example: Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide


Chemical Equation (Symbol Equation)

A shorthand representation of a chemical reaction using chemical formulae and symbols. Chemical equations show the exact formulae of all reactants and products and, when balanced, show the correct mole ratios.

Example: 2Mg + Oā‚‚ → 2MgO
